SEGA Games Implements Responsible Gaming Measures
Following the recent launch of its SEGA-branded online casino and poker sites, Alderney-based SEGA Games Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese video software giant SEGA Corporation, has signed an agreement with 192business for the supply of its age and identity verification services, while also agreeing a deal with Quova, providers of IP geolocation data services.
Citing the importance of responsible gaming and its commitment to the highest standards, SEGA Games said that both gaming sites will enforce a strict policy regulated by 192business, which will ensure that all players are over the age of 18 and able to enjoy their online gaming experience securely and reliably.
“We at SEGA Games Ltd believe that responsible gaming is the essence of developing an enjoyable gaming experience,” said a SEGA Games spokesperson. “Teaming with 192business provides not only us, but most importantly our players, with the security and confidence that their gaming experience is free of any wrong doing, under-age players or unscrupulous activity.”

“We were impressed by Quova’s outstanding reputation in the online gaming sphere and its depth of accuracy” said SEGA. “By using Quova we can ensure that geographical-based content restrictions are in place, thereby making sure that we comply with the regulatory requirements of various jurisdictions.”
In future, SEGA Games hopes to advance its use of the data to display relevant promotions and streamline its online sales process enabling the company to more efficiently introduce relevant deals to new and existing customers worldwide.
“The development of the online gaming industry has resulted in a growing demand for accurate IP address data,” said Steve Sawyer, VP of Business Development Worldwide at Quova. “This is a very tightly regulated sphere and having a transparent view of a customer’s location is essential to ensure compliance in today’s virtual world. We are extremely excited to be working with a company with a reputation and history such as SEGA’s.”
bwin to Lose AC Milan Shirt Sponsorship Next Season
a blow to its marketing strategy in the rapidly expanding Italian gaming market, Austria’s bwin is to cease its sponsorship of AC Milan from next season after the Italian football giant signed a four-year deal to replace bwin with Dubai’s Emirates airline in a deal worth at least €60 million.
bwin has been the main sponsor of AC Milan, one of the most famous football clubs in world football, since signing a lucrative four-year deal in 2006 which allowed the company to advertise around the club’s San Siro stadium, as well as on the team’s shirts.
The loss of its landmark sponsorship of AC Milan will be a blow to bwin’s presence in the emerging Italian online gaming market, which will be boosted this year by the introduction of online casino as well as bingo following strong growth in online poker last year.
AC Milan’s new shirt deal with Emirates will begin at the start of the 2010/11 season and furthers an existing relationship between the two parties which began in 2007. Emirates’ football sponsorship now numbers a host of leading clubs across Europe including Arsenal, Hamburg, Paris Saint Germain and Olympiacos.
As for bwin, football continues to be the main corner-stone in the company’s three-pillar sponsorship strategy, with the company expected to focus its attention on its hugely successful sponsorship agreement with Spanish football giant Real Madrid which currently runs until the end of the 2012/13 season.
bwin’s commitment to the MotoGP World Championship, where it has been a fixture for many years as title sponsor in several races, forms the company’s second pillar, while the third pillar in bwin’s sponsorship portfolio is basketball.

Playtech Takes Bingo Lead with Virtue Fusion Acquisition
Securing its position as the leading online gaming software supplier across all key product groups, Playtech Limited said Monday that it has agreed a £36 million takeover of leading online bingo software provider Virtue Fusion.
Playtech said the acquisition would significantly enhance its own bingo offering, bringing in new licensees as well as enhancing its relationships with a number of existing licensees.
As a result of the acquisition, both Playtech and Virtue Fusion’s existing licensees will benefit from increased liquidity when the networks are combined, facilitating more frequent games as well as higher prize values and jackpots. The new bingo licensees will also have access to an extensive number of side games including networked slots and other games in Playtech’s portfolio.
Playtech will fund the acquisition from its existing cash resources, paying an initial consideration of £29 million subject to agreed working capital adjustments, with an additional earn-out payment of up to £7 million payable in the first quarter of 2011 based on adjusted EBIT performance this year.
“The acquisition places Playtech in the leading position in international online bingo markets, complementing our leading position in poker and casino and, following the GTS acquisition, as a content provider,” said Mor Weizer, CEO of Playtech. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to provide licensees with a comprehensive portfolio of best of breed gaming products.
Weizer said that the deal was another significant enhancement of Playtech’s product suite, bringing further liquidity and experience to the company’s existing bingo offering and further strengthening its position as the “pre-eminent software provider to the online gaming industry.”
“In a number of newly regulated markets, bingo is an embedded part of the social and gaming culture and a product which finds early favour with regulators,” continued Weizer. “Consequently we see this acquisition as not only furthering what is already Playtech’s competitive advantage in the growing online gaming market as a whole, but as having the potential to generate meaningful opportunities in newly regulated markets.
“We believe that the acquisition of Virtue Fusion creates value for Playtech shareholders and the board anticipates the transaction will be earnings accretive in 2010 and beyond,” he concluded.
Last year Virtue Fusion reported a 52% increase in turnover to £12.3 million with an adjusted EBITDA of £3.8 million, up from £2.3 million in the previous year. The company has more than 20 licensees including well-known brands such as Mecca Bingo, William Hill, Ladbrokes, Virgin, Sky, Bet365, Paddy Power and Crown Bingo.
“We are delighted to be a part of Playtech,” said Bob McCulloch CEO of Virtue Fusion. “This deal will ensure our operators continue to benefit from the market leading VFA Bingo product and in addition can now profit from Playtech’s greater international reach and access to a wider games portfolio.”
Shares in Playtech Limited (Co. Profile) (LSE:PTEC) are currently trading at 467.50 pence per share in London this morning.
Snooker Subject of UK Suspicious Betting Probe
In a blow to the sport of snooker, professional snooker player Stephen Lee was arrested last week amid allegations of match-fixing and cheating following a joint investigation by West Midlands police and the UK Gambling Commission.
Following concerns about suspicious betting activity from the Gambling Commission, West Midlands Police arrested Stephen Lee last Thursday on suspicion of cheating. Mr Lee, formerly ranked no. 5 in the world, was subsequently released on bail Friday.
A statement from Stephen Lee’s management company, On Q Promotions, confirmed Mr Lee has been taken into police custody for questioning last Thursday.
“Stephen cooperated fully with the police inquiry and was released without charge,” said the statement. “He does not expect any charge to be made and denies any involvement with cheating or betting irregularities.”
As it awaits the outcome of the investigation, World Snooker, the commercial arm of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, said in a statement: “We are aware of the recent news articles concerning match fixing and are awaiting further reports. In instances where the Gambling Commission commences an investigation into a match, the WPBSA works together with the Commission to assist in its enquiries and the WPBSA will hold its own investigation open pending the conclusion.
“However, neither the Commission nor the WPBSA will release information surrounding a betting matter while an investigation is ongoing,” the statement concluded.
